You are met at Orte train station, a 30-minute ride from Rome.  By special arrangement, you can also be met at your central Rome or Florence hotel and escorted by car or train.

We visit the archeological ruins of a port on the mighty Tiber River, where all Tuscan and Umbrian produce were transferred and carted down the Via Flaminia to Ancient Rome. The neighboring shepherd grazes his flock in and around the baths, amphitheater, and ancient oil port.   After a walk through the grand , romantic campus, we visit his family who is busy making ricotta cheese and primo sale pecorino from the morning’s milk.

We next visit a vineyard and its modern wine cantina where the process of making the vino nuovo continues to become vintage Sangratino. An important part of the process is tasting, and, since we have a driver, everyone can help as much as desired!

Lunch is served at an organic, hilltop agriturismo, where we see the food “on the hoof” and in the field as we approach. In addition to meats and catch, mushrooms and other forest-foraged foods are the basis of much of the Umbrian cuisine. The view from the restaurant is of the hilltop town of magical Narnia, of "The Lion, Witch and Wardrobe" fame, where C.S. Lewis was inspired by just this view.

Before returning to the Orte train station, we stop at a frantoio down the road to get Sabina olive oil, the first oil given the prestigious, quality designation of D.O.P in Italy.

You return to Rome in time for dinner --- if you ever think you can eat again!

Should you choose to stay in Umbria, arrangements can be made to stay at a medieval convent recently converted into a fine hotel situated in a medieval hilltop town. We enjoy Sagratino wine in a rock cantina, and eat the fresh, locally produced food in a grand setting at dinner.

UMBRIAN HARVEST

Spend a magical day in the ‘Green Heart’ of Italy along the Tiber River exploring historic ruins, visiting a sheep farm to see ricotta cheese being made, a beautiful wine cantina to sample wine, and an olive oil cooperative to see where olive oil is pressed. All this plus a great lunch!
