With summer is full-swing, we visit a series of spectacular gardens. The first is planted with heirloom annuals --- flowers, flowers and more flowers. This important garden has recently been redesigned, with exhaustive research of the original varieties of 300 years ago. The garden’s originator had a global passion for plants and a budget only limited by the health of the Papal coffers.
Next, we stop at a bar for rest and refreshments near the Colosseum before completing our ride over four of Rome’s seven original hills, to the private orchid collection Orchid of the City of Rome. This 5000+ plant collection has many examples of on-site breeding, and is expertly curated by Fabio Fragiacomo for over 20 years. Often times, he joins us in the greenhouses before we take a passeggiata through San Sisto Garden, which has been pruned by dedicated gardeners for centuries, to Napoleon Bonapart’s recently restored Orangerie, built during the early years of the 19th century.
Finally we visit a Medieval Medicine Garden, curated by modern monks, in Rome’s “secret” amphitheater, with vegetables for the religious and neighborhood communities. It is located on the campus of a complex where the world's most important Christian relics are still housed.
We return to Piazza Venezia in time for any dinner plans.
